Shaun Swingler is a South African award-winning director of photography based between the United Kingdom and South Africa, specialising in documentary and commercial work.
He has received numerous awards and accolades, most notably a South African Film and Television Award, a CNN Africa Journalist Award, and an RTS Award nomination. His work has screened in many international festivals and exhibitions as well as on platforms such as HBO, Disney, The New York Times, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, SHOWTIME, VICE, CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera. He has also shot commercial campaigns for global brands and organisations such as adidas, Google, Uniqlo, MasterCard, HSBC, WWF, Oxfam, Big Issue, and De Beers.
In Shaun’s fourteen-year career, he’s worked on stories including the drug war in the Philippines, rebuilding efforts in Gaza, earthquake rescue in Turkey and Syria, shark fishing in Congo-Brazzaville, settlement expansion in the West Bank, political assassinations, vigilantism, and the illegal firearm trade in South Africa, Al-Shabaab deradicalisation in Mogadishu, the abalone trade on South Africa's Western Cape coast, wildlife trafficking in the DRC, the heroin trade in Kenya, transactional sex in Lake Malawi’s fishing communities, health stories in conflict-hit Central Mozambique, and a coup in Zimbabwe among others.
Shaun is also the co-author of a best-selling South African true crime book, and his writing and photography have been published in Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, Harper's Magazine, and VICE.
Throughout his career, Shaun has sought to approach complex and challenging stories with nuance and empathy, creating engaging work in high-pressure situations that helps illuminate the world around us.
